Getting a taste for better immune support
26 Oct 2021
The global functional food market was valued at US$173.26 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach US$309 billion by 2027. There is a strong demand for functional food products to support healthy immune function and combat the adverse impact of air pollution, especially for products backed by solid scientific evidence.
BerriQi® is poised to capture a segment of this rapidly growing global market, with a strong focus on Asia. Drivers for growth include increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, an aging population, and the health impacts of severe air pollution.
BerriQi arose from a partnership between Plant & Food Research and Anagenix, which supplies ingredients for functional food, supplement and nutraceutical producers. Plant & Food Research has shown that the BerriQi Boysenberry and apple juice supplement may offset the effects of severe air pollution.
After promising pre-clinical findings, we have been granted National Science Challenge funding for a human clinical trial. Deteriorating air quality in China, coupled with consumer research, suggests there is strong demand for functional food products designed to combat the adverse impact of air pollution, especially when backed by solid scientific evidence.
We’re now working on a powder version of BerriQi which is cheaper to ship, offers the consumer control over dilution, could be put into capsules, and could be sprinkled on food.
