Effect of dietary supplement on appetite

Can daily supplementation with a hop extract support long-term weight loss?

Obesity is associated with a decreased quality of life along with an increased risk of a number of lifestyle-related diseases including diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and cancer. Traditional lifestyle treatments for obesity have focused on diet as both a preventative and treatment option. While diet has proven to be effective, poor compliance – driven primarily by hunger and food cravings - can limit efficacy.

Amarasate®, an extract of a hop cultivar bred by Plant & Food Research and only grown in Aotearoa New Zealand, has been shown to control appetite and reduce feelings of hunger when given before a meal. This reduction in appetite is from the stimulation of appetite supressing gut hormones that are also linked to long-term weight loss.

In this study, we seek to investigate the effect of an Amarasate® dietary supplement, along with diet and exercise advice, during a six-month weight loss program.

The clinical study is now fully recruited and in progress; we are no longer seeking volunteers.
