Hops for weight management

Diets routinely don’t work, and one major factor is hunger!
Amarasate™ was one of 900 plant extracts screened in the laboratory as part of the government-funded ‘Foods for Appetite Control’ programme, which aimed to identify plant extracts that control feelings of hunger, increase satiety (a state of feeling full), and reduce food intake.
The Amarasate extract, from a hop cultivar bred by Plant & Food Research and grown exclusively in New Zealand, was found to trigger the body’s natural satiety response. Early clinical trials showed that Amarasate could reduce short-term calorie intake in healthy men by around 20%. A second trial, published in Nutrients showed that Amarasate reduced feelings of hunger during a 24-hour fasting period, including the absence of an increase in hunger at lunchtime.
In April 2018, calocurb™, a weight management supplement containing the Amarasate hop extract, was launched by Calocurb Limited in New Zealand. calocurb was also launched in the US in May 2018, with plans to launch in additional markets over the next few years.
Amarasate is thought to work by triggering the body’s “bitter brake” – a physiological mechanism that tells the brain to stop eating. This occurs when bitter taste receptors on certain cells in the gut are triggered by bitter compounds.
