Dr Mette Nielsen

Senior Scientist

I am a senior scientist in the Insect Dynamics, Ecology & Sustainability team based at Lincoln. I undertook my original training in crop protection at Copenhagen University in Denmark (BAgrSc & MSc) and then attended Lincoln University where I received my PhD in Entomology. I joined Plant & Food Research as a researcher in 2007 and my focus over the last decade has been on small insect vectors in areas such as distribution, monitoring, management, biosecurity, biocontrol, biology, behaviour, diagnostics, and chemical ecology. I have a particular fondness for thrips (Thysanoptera) and have worked extensively on this insect both in New Zealand and overseas over the years. I have worked on a number of horticultural crops from strawberries and onions to cut flowers and vine and enjoy working with industry and growers to investigate and find sustainable pest management solutions for their insect issues. I have a strong interest in integrated pest management no matter the insects or the cropping system.
