New Cultivar Innovation

Dr Robert Schaffer

Scientist

My research interest covers a number of areas, including fruit development, ripening, genetics, genomics and more recently indoor growing (Controlled Environment Agriculture). I lead a large kiwifruit programme that aims to understand the molecular mechanisms and genetic control of key fruit traits including flavour, fruit softening, colour, fruit size and skin types. This is facilitated by a fantastic set of genetic resources, a high quality genome, and high throughput tools to rapidly measure different traits in the fruit. I am also involved in projects that aim to identify genes that control of flesh development in apples as well as the development of floral organs in gillenia and blueberry. I work closely with many inspiring people within the organisation, across New Zealand and abroad. I have a joint appointment with Plant & Food Research and the University of Auckland and am based at the Motueka research site.
