New Cultivar Innovation

Dr Sara Montanari

Molecular Breeder

My main research interest is in molecular breeding of horticultural crops and in understanding the genetic control of important characters in plants and animals. I specialise in blueberries, raspberries, pears and hops, but I also work on other plants and collaborate with the aquaculture genomics team. The long-term objective of my research is to understand traits of ecological and economic importance to speed up the selection process for cultivar development, and to gain insights into plant and animal responses to a changing climate and pest and pathogen attacks, as well as improve food quality and availability. My expertise includes genomics, genetic mapping and association studies, marker-assisted selection, development of phenotyping protocols, study of genetic diversity and germplasm characterisation, population genetics, and design of genotyping tools.
