New Cultivar Innovation

Seelan Gunaseelan

Senior researcher

I work as a senior research associate at Plant & Food Research with multidisciplinary knowledge and skills. I have expertise in following research areas: apple breeding; tissue culture and Agrobacterium-mediated transformation; post-harvest evaluation of apple and kiwifruit during ripening and storage; plant molecular biology; plant physiology; and maintenance of glasshouse grown apple and kiwifruit plants. My main research interests are in cold-induced softening and ethylene-independent ripening of fruits and the use of fast flowering apple plant populations at Plant & Food Research. I am currently working towards generating a yellow-fleshed super apple fruit containing beneficial health compounds. I also work on fast flowering pears and fast flowering red-fleshed apple plants.
